LONDON, January 31, 2022: The Association of British Tamil Lawyers (ABTL) marked its official launch with a successful online event attended by a wide range of students, lawyers and colleagues. We received well wishes from the office of the President of the Law Society and the Head of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators with attendance from the office of the Chair of the Bar Council.
The event was launched by Arunn Thiruchelvam from the Operational Committee who provided an introduction and background to ABTL’s structure and goals. This was followed by a series of candid, personal messages from the Advisory Committee touching on their personal, lived experiences. The Student Services Department’s Co-Lead Nalo Nambirajah introduced various initiatives offered by the Student Services Department including the Mentoring Programme and previous mentors and mentees spoke about their experiences of the programme.
Dr S Chelvan, the Chair of the Executive Committee, concluded the event by highlighting the importance of law firms and chambers getting involved with this diversity and inclusion initiative. He touched on his previous message which said:
“This is the time for a positive push to ensure greater representation in the legal professions. ABTL has been founded to create a space for professional guidance and mentorship, empowerment and support, and a positive vision for this generation, and future generations of British Tamil Lawyers.”
